| What
are the Molecules Learning? Math Workshop We have been measuring using non-standard items such as paper clips, locking cubes and teddy bears. This week each Molecules received their own tape measure (thank you Ikea!) and we looked at the length of an inch. We then practiced measuring items around the room and stems in the courtyard. We also read subtraction stories and wrote and illustrated subtraction story problems. Language Arts During Language Rotations, Molecules looked at the long \Uu\ vowel. This week in Where the Red Fern Grows: Billy works hard in the winter and summer saving every cent he can to buy the hound dogs that he dreams about every night. He has a bad case of "dog desire" disease. Two poems were added to the poetry journal. We worked in pairs to build our fluency. We are adding excitement to our expression! The more reading sounds like talking, comprehension skills will increase. Next week we will introduce plays to continue our fluency practice. Remember MARS books that appear to be read easily should sound fluent when read aloud. Social Studies: We used Google Earth and took a birds-eye view of the world and made the discovery that water covers most of our planet. We also zoomed in slowly and landed on top of ASFS. This was a great way to look at continents, countries, states, and cities. Click here to download Google Earth. It's a must for any home! Science: During School Habitat Day, Mrs. Clark joined us as we learned about pollinating. The Molecules became butterflies, spread pollen to flowers around the room and then returned to their flower and used their proboscis to drink the nectar. What fun! This week also began our study of animals in all the kingdoms. To begin, we are looking at the climate, animals, and characteristics of the eastern woodlands. We've listed all the kingdoms and will compare and contrast the similarities and differences.
Next Week .. Extending our look at the globe, we will create our own maps and will include a compass rose and labels. We will look at fractions and symmetry. Looking at plurals by adding \s\
